Wayne Rooney compared Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
I admire both Leo and Cristiano for going their own way.
Ronaldo openly declares: I am the best, I want to be the best. And when Messi talks, he focuses more on the team and the trophies he wants to win. There is no right or wrong [approach]. This is how two different people motivate themselves.
Now Cristiano is going through a difficult period, and he is 37 years old. But he and Messi have achievements that, I think, we will never see in the performance of another player.
In a way, they needed each other, and I suspect deep down they enjoyed the rivalry. When Cristiano moved to Real Madrid, they pushed each other: Ronaldo scored two goals on Saturday, Messi scored two the next day, and they helped each other reach even greater heights and score more goals.
Neither of them ever worked much in defense. Messi doesn`t plan on playing 90 minutes defensively, but he never did, even as a young player at Barcelona. And now, at 35, he realizes that he must save energy.
We see Leo picking his moments and stepping in at the right time to make a difference - and that`s where he was so effective in Qatar, ` the former Manchester United striker wrote in a column.
